The present large village is about four miles south east of Tamworth. Pooley Hall was built in 1509 and is one of the oldest brick structures in the county. There was a Norman abbey in Polesworth and the church, approached through the abbey gateway, incorporates some of the walls of the abbey church.

Congregational Church...

Information kindly submitted by Rev. Bob Neale.

From records held by the Chapel Congregationalists were once known as 'Independents' and were worshipping in Polesworth at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The original place of worship is unknown as records from those early days do not exist.

In 1772 a Mr Thomas Harris of Polesworth died leaving in his will a cottage, a butchers shop with out houses to a Miss Hannah Riddind and to any future children she may have. The Butchers shop was let to a Mr Robert Glen who was allowed to carry on the business.

Miss Ridding married Mr Thomas Thompson in 1773. On their death their eldest son John Thompson then became the owner of the buildings and the land.

On the 9th July 1828 these buildings were obtained for worship from Mr John Thompson by a carpenter by the name of Robert Matsel Miller on behalf of the members of the Independent Chapel.

Some twenty years later in 1850 the buildings and land were purchased outright by the Chapel for the sum of £170. In the same year a school room was added to the Chapel at a further cost of £130 thus making the premises complete as can be seen to the present day.

The Chapel of today is in need of major refurbishment, the cost of this work is in the £300,000 bracket, the Church members are making every effort possible to raise the said amount and so ensure that the Chapel which has served the village of Polesworth for so long in the past will continue to do so in the future.

Rev. Bob Neale.
