The present large village is about four miles south east of Tamworth. Pooley Hall was built in 1509 and is one of the oldest brick structures in the county. There was a Norman abbey in Polesworth and the church, approached through the abbey gateway, incorporates some of the walls of the abbey church.

Congregational Church...

Information kindly submitted by Rev. Bob Neale.

In 1906 the Rev John F. Houghton who was the minister of Polesworth and Baddesley Ensor
Congregational Churches began holding services for both adults and children in Dordon Council School.
In 1907 a plot of land was bought at the bottom of Long Street, Dordon, for the building of a
Congregational Church. The Church was built the following year in 1908.

For three years the Rev Houghton ministered at Dordon along with the Polesworth and Baddesley Ensor
Churches until he left in 1911, The Church was without a minister until 1916. It was during this period that
Dordon Congregational Church became involved with the Wilnecote Group of Congregational Churches.

The Church later suffered serious financial difficulties and was forced to close around 1920. It was due
to the efforts of eleven of its members, in particular Mr Bernard Harris, the Church reopened in 1922.

In 1933 the Church decided to build a new Sunday School adjoining the present Church.
There were many set backs but funds were slowly accumulated, which included a very generous gift of
5,000 new bricks from a local brick works. Work finally commenced on the Sunday School in 1937.

The new building was opened by the Church's first minister Rev J. F. Houghton on
Saturday 18th September 1937. It is true to say that Dordon Congregational Church
has played a major part in the life of Dordon village over the years and with your support it will continue to do so.

Rev. Bob Neale.
